What is happening in Mettet?

The planting was carried out following a premature felling of declining oaks and beeches, and Douglas firs.

This is a reforestation project where PlantC supports 3,872 trees across 1.9 hectares. Three species make up the reforestation in Mettet:

• Red Oak
• European Larch
• Douglas Fir

This is a plot reforested with a mix of 6 rows of Larch and Douglas fir. Red oaks, as well as sessile oaks and chestnut trees (not referenced in the project), have been planted along the paths, and natural regeneration is expected in the unworked rows.

Utilizing a diversity of species is beneficial for birdlife (e.g., flowers, fruits, and acorns serve as food sources for birds, insects, and small mammals). When leaves fall, humus is generated, and root systems are complementary. This will impact the recycling of deep elements, the biological activity of the soil, the fixation and structuring of the soil.

• Planting period: January 2024.
• Survival rate: verification in progress.
• 555.06 tonnes of CO₂ sequestered over 30 years.

April 2026 visit

On April 9, 2026, Romain visited the plot to check the progress of the planting in the presence of the expert and the owner. Wildlife pressure is very high (wild boars and deer).
While walking on the plot, 2 wild boars fled upon our arrival. Despite protective measures (electrified wires, repellents, sleeves), some plants were damaged.
The survival rate is above the expected 80% (higher for conifers compared to broadleaves). Replanting and the installation of sleeves were necessary.

On the upper part of the plot, we find the broadleaves (in addition to red oaks, the manager planted sessile oaks and chestnut trees).

The planting is closely monitored. Coexistence with the local wildlife must be watched. We leave confident about the project, which reminds us that careful monitoring is essential.
