Welcome to Ere in Tournaisis! The de Halleux family is committed to promoting ecological connectivity within their farm!

Château Farm is a large-scale agricultural operation, established in Ere since the 2000s. Primarily focused on growing vegetables, cereals, and potatoes, the farm is undergoing a renewal, based on agroecological principles. Soil conservation and ecosystem regeneration, such as hedge planting, are the key areas of action we have set for ourselves. This agricultural transition is also accompanied by the transfer of acquired technical, economic, and relational knowledge to the new generation. Of course, the ambition is great, and the will to achieve it even greater!

At Elisabeth’s initiative, the objective here is to plant 350 meters of double-row hedge with standard trees.

Hedge establishment and runoff channels

The first meeting with Thérèse and Vincent took place in April 2023. We took the time to listen to their concerns, to determine the linear arrangements and functions desired for the hedge. It extends for 350 meters and aims to strengthen the ecological connectivity within the farm.

The Hedge: An Ecological and Nourishing Corridor

Meeting numerous criteria eligible for its Takecare sustainability program, the company Trafic chose to co-finance the approximately 350 meters of living hedges.

On February 20, 2024, the linear planting was carried out. The planting team, equipped with an auger, planted 1,200 native plants and 39 standard trees (sessile oak and rowan).

The hedge consists of single-seed hawthorn, dog rose, black elderberry*… A mixture of 8 different species of native trees and shrubs are planted.

When we addressed the chapter “Biodiversity” as part of our Take Care program, the team’s desire to take concrete local action quickly became apparent.
We then found in PlantC an attentive and committed partner, capable of offering us a solution that is both professional and has a strong impact on biodiversity.

Thanks to the network of farmers and market gardeners spread throughout Belgium, we will be able to develop a project near each of our stores by 2030.

Our decision to collaborate with Plant C is also based on the rigorous approach to selecting its partners: plantations are chosen according to the local biotope, implemented with care, and are subject to regular monitoring.

We are delighted with this collaboration, enriched throughout the year by clear information and constant visibility on current and upcoming projects.
