Bart has a comprehensive vision of his plots, with the ambition to create kilometers of hedges in Bonsin (Somme-Leuze). His goal is to strengthen biodiversity by connecting the hedges to the woodlands and to the alignments existing, thus allowing species to move from one environment to another.

Bart is taking action for biodiversity.

For 2025, we are doing it again!

During our meeting in 2024, Bart impressed us with his ambitious hedge project spanning kilometers. In 2024, he planted nearly 2 km of hedges along the perimeter of his plots with us. We wish to continue the project with a 380-meter linear native hedge in a single row.

The Planting

The planting took place in November 2025. PlantC was able to inspect the site. Following modifications to sections to allow more access points to the plots, an additional 60 m section was determined (cutting across a runoff axis), along the chicken coop.

Why do the plants have a blue tint? This is a repellent that we apply in certain cases when we know the herbivore pressure (wildlife such as deer) is extremely high. It is a substance that has a deterrent effect through taste, mouthfeel, smell, color, or touch for the animal. In other words, we limit damage related to browsing, rubbing, and bark stripping. In a few months, its effect will have faded.

Visit on April 3, 2026

The monitoring visit took place in typical early-April weather: cool, slightly damp, but with no unfavorable conditions for observing the site. The plantings are in good overall condition, and game pressure is well under control thanks to the use of repellents. The mulching is correctly installed, ensuring good protection for the young plants and limiting competition from grasses. The buds are still only slightly awakened as the season is still cool. But the arrival of the first leaves is already clearly visible.

Visit on May 8, 2026 & Nature workshop with businesses

A second visit was organized with partner businesses. It made it possible to run an awareness-raising and information workshop on the fundamentals of ecological management in an agricultural setting, including:

  • Why plant a hedge in an agricultural field?
  • Naturalist observations A few insects were observed on site, illustrating the immediate value of hedges as refuge habitats and ecological corridors.
