REFORESTATION FOR CLIMATE AND BIODIVERSITY

The challenges surrounding the Belgian forest are numerous. In this context, this is a reforestation project where 9 tree species were planted:

  • Chestnut: 240 individuals.
  • Red Oak: 200 individuals.
  • Sessile Oak: 240 individuals.
  • Rowan: 120 individuals.
  • Wild Cherry: 100 individuals.
  • Small-leaved Lime: 100 individuals.
  • Wild Service Tree: 140 individuals.
  • Sycamore Maple: 140 individuals.
  • Beech: 120 individuals.

Furthermore, they represent a good array of associated species, beneficial for avifauna (acorns). Other fruits are produced and are highly appreciated by birds. Finally, there is strong melliferous potential. The generated humus and root systems will impact the recycling of deep elements and the biological activity of the soil. Of course, the complementarity of species allows for the fixation and structuring of the soil. Across the entire reforestation effort, PlantC supports 1,400 trees.

  • Planting period: February 2022.
  • The survival rate was checked in autumn 2022.
  • 239.5 tons of CO2 sequestered over 30 years.

This project is carried out in partnership with the Royal Belgian Forestry Society.

PLOT VISIT IN 2023

This plot was subject to an insect attack, the bark beetle, involving the removal of diseased spruces. No fewer than 9 species succeeded them.

Planting cells of beech, red oak, chestnut, sessile oak, rowan, wild cherry, small-leaved lime, wild service tree, and sycamore maple were created for a total of 1,400 trees across two hectares.

Protected Red Oak

This density may seem low, but that is precisely the advantage of cell planting (also called ‘klump’): to concentrate maintenance and protection efforts on very small areas. Ultimately, a target tree will be selected for each cell. Between these cells, natural regeneration is allowed to support the growth of the cells.

Illustration of cells or klump

Our plot visit revealed a very good survival rate. We noted some damage from cervids that manage to browse the tops of the plants above the protective sleeves. The manager surrounded the cells with barrier tape; this element swaying in the wind can disturb the cervids and limit browsing.
