Reforestation in Tellin in Detail

In Tellin, this is a reforestation project where PlantC supports 2,000 trees over nearly 2 ha. There are five species: European Larch, Beech, Sessile Oak, American Oak, and Wild Cherry.

Species Palette

This combination of deciduous and coniferous species is part of a reforestation of a coniferous plot post-bark beetle infestation.

Using a diversity of species is beneficial for avifauna (flowers, fruits, and acorns, food sources for birds, insects, and small mammals, for example). Consequently, when leaves fall, humus is generated, and root systems are complementary. This will also impact the recycling of deep elements, the biological activity of the soil, the fixation and structuring of the soil.

Plot Location – Tellin
  • Planting Period: winter 2022-2023.
  • Survival Rate: 90%
  • 154.48 tonnes of CO2 sequestered over 30 years.

Project conducted in partnership with the Royal Forestry Society of Belgium.

Visit to the Tellin Plot in 2024

We visited the site on May 16, 2024, just before heavy spring showers. We were lucky; during the visit, we enjoyed radiant sunshine!

After a bark beetle outbreak that affected part of the stand, the owner chose to call upon SRFB and PlantC to replant on her plot.

It is a region rich in biodiversity for both fauna and flora. The soils of Famenne are generally poor soils where the rock, namely shale, is not deep. Consequently, many highly diverse plants can grow there.

The owner took a chance on five different species, and she was right! In the context of climate change, it is important not to put all one’s eggs in one basket. Indeed, with diseases and insect attacks becoming more prevalent, certain species are ideal targets.

That is why, on this plot, we find a mix of coniferous and deciduous trees.

The species were planted in several cells of the same species, which is already great, but you will see in other forest visits that it is possible to mix species on the same planting line!
