Hedges in Tohogne at Misse Farm

François Misse is a farmer and veterinarian in Tohogne, a district of the town of Durbuy. His dream: to manage his Belgian Blue and Wagyu cattle farm with his family on the Ardennes border while also working as a veterinarian for cattle. It was with the desire to promote the welfare of his animals that François approached PlantC to plant hedges. Thanks to our collaboration with Trafic, this project was able to come to fruition!

After surveying the plots, we identified several locations for planting hedges. As the farm is surrounded by forests, the hedges will significantly contribute to the ecological network of the area, stabilize the soil, and enhance runoff management, while also protecting his livestock from the sun and gusts of wind.

Hedge section locations. In green, double-row hedge, and in blue, single-row hedge.

The planting project includes four hedge sections:

  • An 80-meter single-row hedge
  • An 85-meter double-row hedge
  • A 328-meter double-row hedge
  • A 170-meter double-row hedge

These melliferous and nourishing hedges will also serve as a habitat for local wildlife, including insects, amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals.

Meeting many criteria eligible for its Takecare sustainability program, the company Trafic chose to co-finance the 663 meters of hedge.

In February 2025, the linear planting was carried out after periods of rain and frost, and under the guidance of the PlantC team, the planter cleared the ground to facilitate the hedge’s implementation.

On a beautiful winter day…

The hedge is composed of guelder roses, hawthorns, and wayfaring trees*, part of a mix of over 10 native tree and shrub species.

Once the hedge was planted, we visited François to personally hand him the famous explanatory sign, which informs passersby of the importance of such a hedge around the farmer’s plots.

We were also able to appreciate the planter’s perfectly executed work.

Want to know the best part? We’re back for more; we’ll be planting no less than a kilometer of double-row hedge with standard trees next year!
